Roy was born in 1957 in Spokane, WA. His family relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969. After graduating from San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, CA, Roy attended Stanford University on an athletic scholarship, becoming an NCAA All-American in Track and Field and a two-time U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in the distance events.
